Schloss Frohnburg

Schloss Frohnburg was built – you guessed it – by one of the Prince Archbishops as a country home. This time it was in the late 1600s and Prince Archbishop Max Gandolf upgraded an existing smaller house for his family. The castle remained in family ownership right up to 1960. It’s a lovely building on large grounds and is found on the charming pedestrian ‘country lane’ – Hellbrunner Allee – about half way between the old town and Schloss Hellbrunn.

The Austrian state acquired the building in 1960 and turned it into the home of the Carl Orff Institute, a part of the Mozarteum University – Salzburg’s famous and elite music university. The Orff Institute is still there today, but it also houses a student residence, rehearsal rooms and a concert hall which can accommodate 80. It’s not unusual to hear students practicing as you pass by the castle.

Fraulein Maria Says

The Sound of Music made the castle famous when it featured as the front of the von Trapp villa. Maria found her confidence as she danced along Hellbrunner Allee and the captain ripped down the Nazi flag in fury when he returned from honeymoon. It was also at the front gate that the family tried to make their silent escape.

For those scenes set on the villa terrace, shots towards the lake were shot at Schloss Leopoldskron while shots towards the house were taken at Schloss Frohnburg. Both cast and crew had their work cut out as they shot everything at two locations and then left it to the editors to stitch it together.

Opening Hours:

The Schloss is unfortunately not open to the public.
