Modern Art Museum

High above the skyline, the ‘Museum der Moderne’ can be seen from across the city. Built in 2004, the building provides 2,300 square meters of exhibition space for contemporary art as well as a terrace cafe / restaurant with the best views of Salzburg.

Fraulein Maria Says

The location of the Museum used to be known as Winkler Terrace and was the location of the start of the Do Re Mi song in The Sound of Music, with the most stunning views over the city.

While the building has been described as ugly and out of keeping with the character of the city, the interior is very spacious and offers ideal conditions for exhibits of 20th and 21st century art. The floor plans are open and large staircases guide you through the different floors. The design has sensitively incorporated the 19th century tower which can be seen in great detail from the glass staircases.

The central exhibition room features a large panoramic window which looks out on the terrace which in turn has a fabulous view across Salzburg. The terrace and its cafe is a great place to sit and look out over the city.

The museum rotates works from its own collection as well as hosting work of International artists. For a taste of what’s on offer you can check out their website here.

In addition to the larger building on the Mönchsberg, the original museum – Rupertinum – is still open in the old town, opposite the Franziskanerkirche.
