Makartplatz

We’re in two minds about this square. The traffic is never ending and it’s not pleasant to wander around, but there’s also lots of interest and some beautiful buildings. The green area in the middle of the square was developed in the 19th century and in summer is dominated by the fabulous magnolia trees.

Starting at the top of the square and working clockwise, the main feature of the square is the Dreifaltigkeitskirche (Trinity Church) which was designed by Fischer von Erlach (who worked on many buildings in Salzburg) at the end of the 17th century. Today it serves as a seminary.

Next we have Mozart’s Residence, where Mozart lived with his parents and sister for 8 years. You can read more about the house in the ‘Mozart’s Residence’ section of the app.

To the bottom of the square you will find the house in which Christian Doppler was born in 1803. It’s a private building today with a nail bar on the ground floor and apartments overhead. Across the street from the Doppler House is the Hotel Sacher and you can read more about this historic hotel in the dedicated section.

Moving clockwise again we come to the Landestheater, the official theatre of the state of Salzburg. There’s been a musical connection here since the early 1600s when it was a ball room. This was turned into a theatre in the late 1700s but contained almost exclusively standing room only. The current building dates to 1893 and coincides with the time when the fortunes of Salzburg began to revive and the tourist industry began to develop.

A few houses along the square and you have the Hotel Bristol, one of Salzburg’s two 5 star hotels and the host to many famous guests over the years including Emperor Franz Josef, Sigmund Freud and Christopher Plummer.

Fraulein Maria Says

Hotel Bristol was home for 36 year old Christopher Plummer during the making of The Sound of Music. It was here that many cast and crew would gather every night to drink copious amounts of alcohol and listen to Plummer play the piano.
