Dwarf Garden

The Dwarf Garden, or Zwergerlgarten, dates back to 1715 and is a collection of 15 dwarves. Many of the statues feature real dwarves who lived in Salzburg as well as other foreigners and visitors who may or may not have been short in stature.

Fraulein Maria Says

Can you spot the dwarf the children played with in the Sound of Music? That’s right, he’s the one with the glasses.

The garden originally contained 28 figures sculpted from Untersberger marble (from the mountain of the same name just a few kms away).

In 1811 however, Ludwig 1st of Bavaria (which controlled Salzburg at the time) found out about them and ordered they be destroyed. Apparently he was superstitious and believed they would bring him bad luck.

Unable to bring themselves to destroy such funky works of art, his officials auctioned them off instead and they were scattered across Europe.

That was to be the end of the Dwarves until 1919 when the city decided to rebuild the garden and bring them back to Mirabell. They managed to find 9 of the original statues and since then have found a further 6, bringing the total to 15 of the original 28 dwarves.

Opening Hours:

The garden is open at the same time as the Mirabell Gardens, from about 6.00am until dusk.

Note that the garden is closed during the winter months.
