Salzburg Christmas Markets

Don’t Miss

We think the Must See Christmas Markets are the Hellbrunn Christmas Market, the Chriskindmarkt at residenzplatz and Domplatz in the city and the one at St Gilgen, about a 40 minute drive from Salzburg.

Austria is well known for its Christmas Markets and Salzburg certainly pulls out the stops every year. Below you will find details on some of the more popular markets.

Christkindlmarkt – Residenzplatz and Domplatz

The largest and oldest is Salzburg Christkindlmarkt which goes all the way back to the 15th century. It fills both Residenzplatz and Domplatz (right in front of the Cathedral) and is supplemented with plenty of events, such as the daily choral recital on the steps of the Cathedral.

The Christkindlmarkt starts on 23rd November and runs until 26th December. Opening hours are as follows:
Monday – Thursday: 10.00am until 8.30pm.
Saturday: 10.00am until 9.00pm
Sunday and Holidays: 9.00am until 8.30pm

7th December (Wednesday): 10.00am until 9.00pm
24th December: 9.00am until 3.00pm
25th and 26th December: 11.0am until 6.00pm

Both local and international choirs will sing every day on the steps of the Cathedral. Monday to Friday singing is at 5.00pm while at weekends it’s at 3.00pm and 5.00pm.

St Gilgen Advent Market

Why not head outside Salzburg, to the beautiful St Gilgen on the Wolfgangsee. The houses and streets are beautifully decorated with hundreds of red and gold advent candles. Stalls and stands have been painted in baroque style by artist Raja Schwahn Reichmann, and these alone are worth the visit. All of this is crowned with an 11 meter tall candle on the shore of the lake.

Add to this over 40 stands selling all kinds of products by local artisans as well as dozens of musical events, nativity plays and a cable-car ride to a nearby peak, and you have a truly magical experience.

The St Gilgen Advent Market runs at weekends, starting on Friday 24th November.

After the 24th November, the market is open from 10.00am until 7.30pm, Thursday to Sunday, right up until Saturday, 23rd December. Note that there is no market on Sunday, 24th December.

Franziskischlössl Advent Market

For something a little different, try the market at the Franziskischlössl, up on the Kapuzinerberg. This market is concentrating on food, and in particular on local, organic foods, produced by local farmers and artisans.

To get to the market you’ll need to either take the short hike up the Kapuzinerberg or take the shuttle from the Gablerbräu on Linzergasse. The shuttle runs from midday on the days of the market and costs €2.50 per person per journey (€5 return).

The market runs every Saturday and Sunday, from 11.00am until 6.00pm, starting on 24th November and running until Saturday, 23rd December.
